Increasing Minimum Wage Helps Business Owners

I was at an interesting meeting this morning with the local Chamber of Commerce. The discussion was on the recent change in law which is going to increase the minimum wage level in our province.

The initial reaction would seem to be catastrophic...sky is falling type of things. But for this group it was an acceptance of the change and dealing with it..in a professional and proactive basis. Head on..no sticking our heads in the mud.

The conversation was amazing. It was all about how can we help small business with this change rather than fight the change. You see it is already in place.

Here's the real neat thing that resulted...the help that was suggested was not about simply raising prices to offset the raise in wage, which anybody can do...that just causes inflation and havoc for all. Nooooooo..this group was all about helping businesses become more productive with the resources they have. Become more efficient...helping business to sell more at the existing prices. And yes..become more focused on promoting a positive working environment to retain staff....who might stay for less mnoney if they were given something decent like respect and appreciation and time to go home to their kids if they was sick.

It was fun listening to the ideas...as an entrepreneur. It was invigorating listening to the ideas....as an entrepreneur. Because ultimately it was all about making business stronger through establishing more solid long term foundations rather than simply short term solutions!

Oh..and what will come of all this positive focus...more sales, less expenses and thus higher wages so we don;t have to worry about this again when the provincial government decides to implement this again because they can;t figure out how to help small business like what the Chamber of Commerce is doing.

Way ta go Fredericton Chamber of Commerce.!!!

Here's to your success!
