...Remember that song from Annie..The Musical? Remember her approach to life? Loved that show...
And she's right. The sun will come out again and again. And you know who understands this the best? The Japenese. Why?...because that's how they approach business.
There business approach is to measure success over 5 years. In North America we focus on today and the month to determine if we are doing well. We want gratification now..right now. And we get anxious if things are going well all the time.
Not the Japenese...they understand true success is based on patience and perserverance. I like that approach...it allows me to keep things in perspective and allows me to have a much more balanced lifestyle. Took a long time to finally get that but better late than never.
For startup entrepreneurs...5 years may seems like a long time to wait on success but here's advice. In Canada and much of North America..we go through 4 seasons a year..each distinctive and each needing a different approach for survival.
I recommend you take the same approach as a startup entrepreneur. Build your business by analyzing it as 4 seasons...measure your growth through that. Look for opportunities to be better in the next season..
Your life does have a destination but before then..there is the journey which can teach us much. Treat your business the same way...

Rivers I love the way you expressed that! Annie IS right, the sun WILL come out tomorrow. The "literal" tomorrow we operate on here in North America is just NOT a good way to focus. The Japanese DO have it right, and I am glad you articulated it in a way people here can understand. My Japanese husband has become WAY too "americanized" in his thinking regarding this. Though lets face it, he HAS had to watch me do two failed start-ups over the last 10 years. He's a bit gun-shy I guess. I am praying and hoping number 3 will be the lucky charm, but didn't Edison have to fail 139 times before he got the lightbulb? At any rate, your willingness to share some of your journey is inspiring me to consider my next venture AND to look at it long term, over 5 sets of seasons!!!

Hey Rivers, good point. I'm sure this holds true for many businesses. I changed the way I built my businesses based on the seasons when I was in real estate. Each season seemed to have it's own type of buyer or seller.
